The power of breath

Why Breath, Meditation, and Grounding Games Matter?

Children are often surrounded by a lot of stimulation, from school and screens to homework, social expectations, sugary foods, and constant noise. Many are also moving through busy routines, emotional ups and downs, and the everyday pressures that come with being a growing child in today’s world. This can make it harder for them to feel settled in their bodies and connected to what they are feeling, which is why learning simple ways to pause, reset, and find regulation can be so important.

Breathing practices can give children a simple way to come back to calm when their bodies feel busy, worried, or overwhelmed. What I love about breathwork is that it does not have to be complicated to be helpful. Even short, guided breathing or mindfulness practices have been shown to support calmness and self-regulation in children, and slow breathing has been linked with lower stress and a calmer body response.

In this program, children learn to use these skills not only in quiet moments, but also during play, imagination, creativity, and everyday exploration. They practice noticing body sensations, using the elements around them, and returning to the present moment in a way that feels playful and natural. Over time, that kind of repetition helps children build real tools for stress reduction and emotional awareness that they can carry with them as they grow.

As a mother of two, I have seen how powerful these tools can be in real life. My own children have used breathing and calming skills on their own, without needing a reminder, to settle fear and anxiety when something feels scary. That is why teaching these skills young matters: children learn not just what calm feels like, but how to find it for themselves.

7-9 yrsMindful Meadow Kids

Program Overview

For our youngest mindful breathers, we take our practice outdoors for playful nature and forest explorations (weather permitting). By engaging in sensory play, kids learn how to use their senses to settle their energy, feel safe, and navigate big feelings. Through well-thought-out games, they actively practice breathing techniques while engaging with their peers and understanding connections with others.

Practice Examples

  • The Balloon Breath: Imagining a colorful balloon in the belly to slow the exhale down.
  • The Ocean Wave: Raising arms and breathing in together, then sweeping arms down with a group 'Whoosh' exhale like a crashing wave.
What a Session Looks Like

A full session begins with a one-word check-in to see how everyone is feeling. We then transition into creative, fun, imaginatory play and nature-reconnecting games—many of which are inspired by Indigenous culture. Afterward, we enjoy a healthy snack. We then move indoors (if we weren't already) to relax and begin our intentional breathing practice, followed by a guided meditation, and close with a circle to reflect on how we feel after the full session.

Grounding Through Play

By minimizing daily screen time, electronics, and digital stimulation from phones, tablets, and television alongside excess added sugars, children can give their brains a much-needed reset to naturally settle their bodies, improve concentration, and build calm through breath and meditation practices.

Parent Tip:

When your child is upset, guide them to breathe through the nose.

Nasal breathing naturally filters, warms, and slows the air down, activating the vagus nerve and signaling safety to the nervous system using the parasympathetic nervous system. It helps shift kids out of fight-or-flight mode much faster than mouth breathing.
